The field of speech and hearing and the JSSISH Mysuru. While a large percentage of human population experience speech, language and hearing disabilities, the availability of professionals to address their needs is inadequate in our country. The JSSISH Mysuru was established in the year 2001-02 to meet the increasing demand for qualified professionals in the field of speech and hearing. This institute is affiliated to the University of Mysore and is recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India, Govt. of India. The Institute offers graduate (B.ASLP) and postgraduate (M.ASLP) courses in Speech and Hearing. These professional courses are designed to train speech and hearing professionals. At JSSISH Mysuru, speech and hearing professionals are trained to habilitate persons with speech and hearing problems of age groups (from infants to the very old). The specialists in this field initiate speech and hearing capacities in individuals who have not developed them and make efforts to reinstate the lost abilities in speech and hearing and other forms of communication (Example: Assisting children who have not learnt to speak because of various reasons, providing voice to those who have lost it after surgical removal of voice box and giving speech training to individuals who have lost the ability to speak). Speech pathologists and audiologists are involved in the diagnosis and treatment of hearing disorders, and evaluation and treatment of speech disorders due to neurological and other etiology.
